The Claiborne Progress has been asked to clarify a typographical error made by the Claiborne County Finance Office that was in an informational packet presented to each of the 21 members of the Claiborne County Commission, the governing body of the county. They receive an informational packet about 10 days prior to the upcoming monthly meeting. That packet contains items to be voted on and/or discussed. This month’s packet included proposed resolution 2017-044. As written, the resolution appears to call for the increase of property taxes from $2.48 to $2.58 per $100 in assessed value, which is incorrect. It is a “typo” in the packet, according to Claiborne County Finance Officer Sam Owens. If adopted as subsequently corrected at the upcoming meeting, the resolution will assure no property tax increase for another 12 months. The commission meets in regular session at 6:30 p.m. on July 17, inside the large courtroom of the Claiborne County Courthouse.
