It looks as though the Claiborne Commission will be performing a ‘do-over’ during the August meeting. Apparently, the county failed to follow the property tax rate guidelines established by the Tennessee Equalization Board, set at $2.57777 – .0023 lower than the $2.58 per $100 in assessed value adopted last month.
According to resolution 2017-52, the revised rate will not raise taxes and will not require a change in the expenditure budget. The resolution states that the reduction will create $12,706.12 less in revenue, which will be an “insufficient impact to the budget.”
The error, it seems, was due to the fact that the new fiscal year falls within the timeline for the Tennessee Five-Year Appraisal Law.
The commissioners will be reviewing the Claiborne County Trustee’s Office financial summary report for the year July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. According to the report, signed by Alice Alexander, the total ending balance for assets is $8,786,036.51.
The property tax summary in the report shows $13,217,655.24 with penalties and interests totaling $86,790.68.
Also on the agenda are the re-appointments of trustees Mitchell Cosby, Jay Chambers, Kay McKinnon and Rusty DeBusk to the Claiborne County Library Board.
The commission will also decide whether to adopt a resolution to extend the length of Creek Road from its current 1.05 miles to two miles in length. The proposed section of roadway, located in the ninth district, is made up of gravel.
Apparently, road superintendent Ronnie Pittman and E-911 director Roger Hager are in agreement with the proposal.
If adopted, the extension will go into effect immediately.
Under old business, the commission will vote, on second reading, whether to adopt Deerwood Lane onto the county road list. The road, located in the first district, measures one-fifth of a mile in length and has a gravel surface.
Both Pittman and Hager have approved this proposal.
As in most cases, the county commissioners can add items to the agenda during the opening moments of the meeting – some of which can become hotly contested.
The commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 21, inside the large courtroom of the Claiborne County Courthouse, located on Main Street in Tazewell.
The public is encouraged to attend these monthly meetings.
