KNOXVILLE — An investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment of a Jellico man on a number of charges, including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
On Aug. 24, at the request of 8th District Attorney General Jared Effler, TBI special agents began investigating the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred along South Myrtle Street in Jellico. The investigation revealed that the incident began when Deron Ausmus, 38, allegedly showed up at the Jellico Police Department and pointed a gun at a dispatcher. Ausmus then fled into a nearby neighborhood.
He was located at a home on South Myrtle Street. When Ausmus came out of the residence, he allegedly confronted officers with a gun. Two officers fired shots, striking him. He was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he received treatment for his injuries.
This week, the Campbell County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Ausmus with four counts of aggravated assault, two counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, one count of prohibited weapons and one count of simple possession.
Ausmus was served Friday in the Knox County Jail, where he was being held on unrelated charges.
