There are a variety of hands on activities associated with 4-H. One of the most rewarding areas 4-H is involved in is positive acts of citizenship. The most recent was the planting of trees by local 4-H members along the Daniel Boone Greenway.
The Daniel Boone Greenway is a walking trail that winds along the curves of Cumberland Gap. This trail spans the distance from Cumberland Gap High School to the town of Cumberland Gap. The Daniel Boone Greenway is used by many in Claiborne County and the surrounding areas. This wonderful trail includes the Daniel Boone Arboretum, an area devoted to trees, and is still being worked on.
Three honor club members accompanied Steve Roark, our area forester, in adding some additional trees to this valued trail. Thoren Heselschwerdt and J.D. Rison both assisted in planting trees along the arboretum and plan on using this volunteer time to expand the scope of their 4-H portfolios. Heselschwerdt’s portfolio will be in Horticulture and Gardening while Rison’s portfolio will be in Engineering. Other volunteers assisting included Allison Rison and Tom Rison. Allison is a senior member of our 4-H Honor club and Tom is an Extension Agent in Claiborne County. This active team planted 12 trees supplied by the city of Harrogate along the area of the trail leading toward Cumberland Gap High School. They planted both white and red Crab Apple trees. Other trees being planted in the Daniel Boone Arboretum include Tennessee native trees.
These trees were a valuable touch to this scenic trail. Those involved in 4-H look forward to lending our hands to the community in the future.
