Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will reopen portions of Harrogate City Park on May 7. Some areas will have limited access as several construction projects continue on the grounds.

Areas where access is prohibited will be marked with orange safety fencing. Portions of the walking loop and adjacent bike trail will be off limits due to the construction. However, the Daniel Boone Greenway, a four mile walking/biking trail that continues to the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, will still be accessible through the park.

“The University is committed to providing the community with exceptional recreational opportunities at the Harrogate City Park,” LMU President B. James Dawson said. “As the building projects continue in and around the park, we are happy to be able to reopen sections for public access. As the summer progresses, more amenities will be restored. I ask for patience with our progress.”

LMU’s plans for the Harrogate City Park include an additional picnic shelter, upgraded playground equipment, a community splash pad and updated bike trail. The new and updated amenities will become available as construction progresses through the summer.

“The construction barriers have been erected for the safety of park guests,” Dawson said. “For safety’s sake, I ask that everyone respect the fences and only utilize the areas that have been deemed safe and open for use.”

LMU is building an intercollegiate lacrosse field and field house for its men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. Construction is also underway on covered tennis courts, which will be utilized by LMU’s tennis program and also be available for public use. While weather will be a determining factor in the duration of the project, University officials anticipate construction could continue through August.

LMU continues to offer the community access to Tex Turner Arena for indoor walking and the LMU Pool is open to the public with a full schedule of aquatic programs.
