Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) President B. James Dawson presented the 2016 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Civic Award to Roger Hansard of Tazewell during the Spring Commencement exercises on May 7.
LMU is one of approximately 60 colleges and universities in the United States to have the privilege of awarding the Algernon Sydney Sullivan and Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards. The awards are given to recognize individuals whose “nobility of character” and dedication to service sets them apart as examples for others.
Hansard, a 1973 LMU graduate, taught elementary and high school prior to embarking on a 27-year career as the director of adult and community education in Claiborne County. During that time, he led the development of the Tennessee Adult High School Model and the Families First Education Model. He has published numerous articles on literacy and education. Hansard is currently the director of the Regional Education Center Ministries, along with his wife, Judy. The non-profit organization provides community educational programs, a food pantry and home renovations for the elderly and people living with disabilities.
Additionally, Hansard serves as interim pastor of First Baptist Church in Cumberland Gap. He has been a founding board member for Leadership Claiborne and the East Tennessee Leadership Association.
“Roger’s dedication to the people of Claiborne County is evident in his life and work,” Dawson said. “He certainly has the noble character we look for when bestowing this honor on members of our community and it is truly an honor to be able to recognize him for his good works.”
