Three Claiborne caregivers were recently named a ‘Caring Heart’ during the 18th annual awards banquet held in Knoxville by Alzheimer’s Tennessee. Diversicare of Claiborne caregiver Nikki Earl, Melissa Simpson of Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice of New Tazewell and Angelica England of SunCrest Hospice of Tazewell were among 106 caregivers recognized this year during the ceremony.

Those with loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia are well-aware of the extraordinary efforts these professional caregivers extend to their clients.

“It takes special people to care for our loved ones who are facing memory loss. We appreciate everything these caregivers do on a personal and professional level each day. Our ‘Caring Hearts’ demonstrate the dedication it takes to help individuals and their families throughout the journey with Alzheimer’s and dementia,” said Linda Johnson, director of programs for Alzheimer’s Tennessee.

Every year, facilities and home health agencies from across east Tennessee nominate a staff member they feel has provided outstanding care to those with cognitive impairment.

Those nominating certain individuals for the honor have based their criteria on the compassion, commitment and generosity of those caregivers who consistently show “a kind spirit and a big heart” for each client and their families.

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), personal care (PCA) and residential assistants (RA) provide the most basic care for those facing dementia at home and in area facilities. The goal of Alzheimer’s Tennessee is to ensure that every dedicated CAN, PCA and RA receives the praise and thanks he or she so richly deserves.

Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Inc. is a 501c3 organization founded in 1983. The nonprofit is dedicated to providing support and assistance to Tennesseans affected by the disease. The organization also advocates for research to prevent, cure and treat Alzheimer’s disease.
