The historic Claiborne County Jail needs you to volunteer for the annual Candlelight Tour “Ghosts of Prisoners Past,” slated for Oct. 21-22. The Claiborne County Historical & Genealogy Society continues with its plans to restore the interior of the structure and will need an estimated $100,000 through grants and private donations to complete that portion of the project. The exterior has undergone roofing and stone work with materials closely resembling those originally used during the period in which the old jail was constructed. The ‘hanging door’ can be seen above the front entrance to the jail, located on the right side of the building as presented in the photograph. For more information, to volunteer or to donate to the restoration program, call 423-526-5737 or email claibornecohistoricalsociety@yahoo.com. The full story of the Old Jail will appear in the next issue of the Claiborne Progress.

The inside view of the original ‘hanging door’ from which many criminals swung during the years the historic Claiborne County Jail was in operation. Folks would make a day of the event, gathering to visit with their neighbors while witnessing the public hanging.
