The Harrogate Book Station will soon be hosting a book signing by local author Jim Woodring. The Pineville-based writer has drawn from his ‘real-life’ job as a domestic violence counselor to pen a convincing novel that takes on the difficult subject matter of abuse within the home.

Woodring, a Pennsylvania native, spent 16 months in the military, stationed in Korea, prior to graduating Cum Laude from Wake Forest College. While there, he majored in sociology with a minor in classical Greek.

He went on to earn his masters degree in divinity before taking up the dual reigns of pastoral counselor and business manager at his wife’s family medical clinic.

Woodring has since returned to the pastorate, where he currently focuses on domestic violence issues.

The author will be signing two of his books during the event, entitled “Always My Fault – A survivor’s story,” and “Who Ate My Okra?”. The book signing will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 5.

The Harrogate Book Station is located at 310 Bristol Road. For more information, call 423-869-9777.

Despite a few delays, the Harrogate Sports Park project is still very much alive. The city is currently awaiting the next round of grant applications, expected to begin in the spring.

The property is not yet ready for local teams to practice or games to be conducted within its borders. However, the sports park is beginning to take shape with the leveling of land, the addition of parking spaces and such amenities as picnic tables, according to Debra England, certified municipal finance officer and city recorder.

The next couple of hurdles to jump will be the inspections for the sewer installation and the construction of the park gate, according to David Lamb, city maintenance supervisor.

In other action, the board of mayor and aldermen (BMA) adopted two ordinances on Monday evening, during its regular October meeting. Both ordinances propose the amending of the city zoning map.

Ordinance 102, if adopted on final reading, will rezone a parcel of a property on Mason Lane from R-1 low density residential to B-1 general business.

Certain parcels of properties located between St. Johns Place and Cleveland Avenue will be amended on the city zoning map from their current R-2 medium density residential to B-1 general business, if Ordinance 103 is adopted on final reading.
