A Walters State Community College administrator has been recognized as one of the Top 30 education technology leaders honored by the Center for Digital Education for efforts to improve education through technology.
Joe Sargent, assistant vice president of information and educational technologies, was listed in the Center’s Top 30 Technologists, Transformers and Trailblazers for 2016.
“I congratulate Joe on this prestigious award,” said Dr. Tony Miksa, president of Walters State.
“Those of us who work at Walters State have benefited from Joe’s leadership in information technology. It is good to see Joe receiving recognition for his work.”
Honorees were selected based on their efforts to improve education through effective use of technology, impact on student outcomes and overall initiative, creativity and leadership skills.
“Our 2016 Top 30 award winners are visionaries who are going against the grain to increase funding, bandwidth, privacy protocols, predictive analytics and the personalization of learning. With technology as their catalyst, they are dedicated to transforming education at the local, state and national levels in ways that have a positive impact on student success,” said Dr. Kecia Ray, executive director of the Center for Digital Education.
The Center cited Sargent’s role in leading Walters State’s information and educational technologies department in make sure students have the tools to complete projects, track graduation progress and access learning resources.
“I am very humbled to receive this award, but the award really reflects the dedication of the entire IET team,” said Sargent.
“Students first is our philosophy. Students are our end product. We are committed to making sure that technology we provide supports education and does not impede it,” Sargent said.
Sargent joined Walters State in 1996.
Over 5,900 credit and 4,000 non-credit students attend Walters State. The college has campuses in Morristown, Greeneville, Sevierville and Tazewell. It offers over 100 associate degrees and technical certificates. Visit Walters State’s website at ws.edu.
