FLAT LICK, Ky. — A Tazewell man was involved in a fatal wreck in Knox County, Kentucky, Sept. 23.

According to a news release from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chad Wagner investigated a two-vehicle wreck that occurred at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 25E and KY 3085 in Flat Lick, Kentucky.

Wagner reported that a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Retha M. Payne, 84, of Flat Lick, was attempting to turn left from U.S. Hwy. 25E southbound onto KY 3085.

A 1988 Chevrolet truck, operated by William E. Smith, 64, of Tazewell, was traveling north on U.S. Hwy. 25E with two passengers in the vehicle, the release states.

As a result of his investigation, Wagner determined that Payne turned into the oncoming path of Smith, according to the release.

Both drivers were transported to the Knox County ARH.

Payne was later airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where she died the next day.

The two passengers in Smith’s truck were not injured.
